Suggested Steps for Managing Stress

Because stress is to pervasive in CFS/FM and its effects so profound, we recommend that you use many ways to combat it and also that you take a broad approach to stress management.

For example, in thinking about how to reduce stress, you could consider making a change in your employment. Such a change could mean switching from full-time to part-time work, working from home, moving to a less demanding job or taking early retirement.

Here are three less drastic ways to begin lessening stress.

Step 1: Daily Relaxation
Set aside 15 to 30 minutes a day for a structured relaxation procedure, which counteracts the fight-or-flight reaction. For step-by-step instructions on several procedures, see Stress Reduction: Five Practical Techniques on the self-help program website.

Step 2: De-Clutter Your House
If your physical environment is a source of stress, make it more orderly, one area at a time. For a success story and how-to ideas, see the article Illness and Housekeeping on the program website or the FlyLady site.

Step 3: Pleasurable Activity
Give yourself something enjoyable to look forward to each day, such as reading a book, listening to music, playing games, doing an art or craft project, or watching a favorite TV show.
