Suggested Steps for Caregivers

Caring for someone with serious illness is often a stressful and tiring experience, in which the caregiver's health takes a back burner. Here are three ways to protect yourself and nurture your relationship with the person who is ill.

Step 1: Take Care of Yourself
To serve your loved one well and to avoid resentment and burnout, take time to get adequate rest, to eat well and to exercise.

Step 2: Make Time for Yourself
Get a respite from caregiving regularly and stay connected with others by maintaining relationships with extended family and friends.

Step 3: Create New Ways to Connect with Your Loved One
Serious illness may make it impossible for you to spend time with the person who is ill in the same way as before, but you can develop new shared activities to do together.
