Suggested Steps for Depression

Depression can feed on itself. Below you’ll find three ways to break out.

Note: If you are deeply depressed, suicidal or have been depressed for some time, get help now. For resources, see the article Killing Me Softly: FM/CFS and Suicide on the self-help program website.

Step 1: Keep a Daily Routine
Fight the inertia of depression by sticking to a daily routine that provide a sense of accomplishment and include things to look forward to.

Step 2: Change Your Self-Talk
Depression often changes the way people talk to themselves, leading their thinking to be excessively pessimistic. Learn to speak soothingly to yourself and change your mental climate by keeping a gratitude journal.

Step 3: Get Professional Help
If you feel stuck, consider talking with a therapist. A counselor can provide support, coping strategies and perspective. Also, because depression can be caused or intensified by changes in brain chemistry, anti-depressant medications may be helpful.
