Suggested Steps for Improving Communication

 

The stresses of serious illness can make good communication difficult for couples. Here are three ideas for constructive conversation.

Step 1: Select Time & Setting Carefully
If you have an important topic to discuss, select a time when both you and your partner can give good attention and you can minimized distraction caused by symptoms like pain and brain fog. Choose a place that minimizes distractions and interruptions.. 

 
Step 2: Set Ground Rules
Agree on how the conversation will be governed. For example, you will discuss only one topic at a time; you won't interrupt one another; and you will focus on solutions.
 
Step 3: Consider Professional Help 
If you conversations on important topics are unproductive, consider getting help from a therapist or other counselor, espcially one knowledgeable about problems created for couples by long-term illness.
